This Simple Task Will Put a Smile on Your Face

Smile

Want to brighten your own day while brightening someone else’s?

Smile.

As I make my way through my daily routine, in my office building, on elevators, in hallways and parking lots and supermarket aisles, I’m always struck/disappointed by how many people are unwilling to exchange acknowledgments — much less pleasantries — with one another.

Heads turn and eyes dart to the floor or phone, as two ships pass in the night.

I get it, because I’ve got an antisocial streak that would make any recluse proud.

And it’s not like you’re ignoring the start of a lasting relationship; in the overwhelming majority of these encounters, you’re never going to see the other person again.

Still, it feels like a missed opportunity.

These interactions, no matter how brief, offer the chance to form a connection, no matter how small.

It’s amazing the impact a split-second of eye contact and recognition can make.

So, with that in mind, I offer you this challenge:

Smile at one stranger today.

As you’re walking toward them and they’re walking toward you, instead of staring at your feet or scrambling to check your email, look them in the eye and smile.

You don’t even have to open your mouth; you can opt for the pursed-lips version. And if you’re feeling ambitious, feel free to toss in a head nod.

Then see how you feel.

Maybe it won’t move your needle. And that’s fine.

But if you’re being completely honest, my guess is that you’ll feel just a little bit better than you did a split-second before.

And who doesn’t want that?
