BRENT STOLLER

A hopeful, (sometimes) humorous take on the traumas of infertility and pregnancy loss.

Make Your Past Your Past

“Make your past your past.”

Those lyrics come from a song by the artist Joshua Radin.

And those were helpful words to hear this morning.

Like I wrote before, I’ve been experimenting with listening to music when I’m getting ready for work. I don’t drink coffee, and the right melody can serve as that needed shot of caffeine.

It was a shot I needed today.

I had a rough go of it yesterday (I won’t bore you with the details), and my malaise carried over into my dream sequence and through the sound of my alarm. I was in a funk.

But as I was making breakfast, above the din of the blender and running sink water, those lyrics hit home.

They reminded me to take a breath, to recalibrate, to start putting my struggles behind me.

No, yesterday wasn’t what I wanted it to be.

But I couldn’t do anything about it anymore, because it was over.

And the last thing I should do is let it weigh me down as I move forward.

After all, today was, as the song’s title explains, a “Brand New Day.”
