30 Days of Joy: Quote of the Day

Man on a rock-climbing adventure

Note: This article is the next step in my challenge to find joy in something — anything — every day for 30 days. Today’s entry is part 13.

I’ve always loved a good quote.

I love when someone puts into words the perfect motivation, or a never-before-thought-of perspective, or exactly what I’m feeling, or the type of person I aspire to be.

As a writer, there’s hope I’ll one day craft something worth citing.

But for the moment, I’m resigned to relying on the words of others. And I’m thankful for when they deliver.

This morning, I came across a quote from author Tim Ferriss so sharp that I was compelled to add it to my running compilation of quotes:

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.”

Actually, Ferriss was quoting the quote of another author, Anais Nin.

This is a brilliant observation, because it packs a double punch: it’s both insightful and inspirational.

And it resonated with me, because it describes me.

I’ve had moments of bravery that have expanded my experiences. And I’ve had moments of fear that have limited my potential.

Unfortunately, the latter has far outweighed the former — a distribution I hope to steadily even out.

And even though I’m aware of this shortcoming, it was nice to be reminded of it — and how to overcome it.
